Panama Canal expansion

A $5.25 billion project to expand the Panama Canal is scheduled for completion in 2014. The project includes two new sets of locks and navigation channels that will be able to handle ships that are 25 percent longer and carry up to three times as much cargo as the largest ships accommodated by the existing canal. The expansion will also allow the canal to add up to 15 passages to its current capacity of 35 ships per day. Source: NY Times, Globe and Mail, Popular Mechanics
