Elgin gas platform at risk of explosion

Methane gas is continuing to flow from Total’s North Sea Elgin platform after it sprang a leak on Sunday, raising the risk of a catastrophic explosion. A gas cloud from the leak, believed to be coming from a non-productive well, is around 90m from a flare burning excess gas. The rig’s owner Total has said the risk of an explosion is low, but industry experts disagree. Total is currently exploring ways to plug the leak. Source: The Scotsman
